Kitchen Backsplash Tile Guide
A kitchen backsplash typically covers the wall between countertops and upper cabinets -- standard height is 18 inches, but full-height backsplashes (counter to ceiling) are increasingly popular. The tile area is calculated as linear feet of countertop x backsplash height, minus any windows.
Short: 6-8 inches (covers the splash zone)
Standard full: 18 inches (counter to cabinet bottom)
Full height: 36-54 inches (counter to ceiling)
Subway tile (3x6) is the most popular backsplash choice -- classic, affordable, and forgiving to install. Mosaic sheets (12x12 mounted on mesh) are even easier for DIY. Natural stone and large-format tiles look stunning but require more skill to cut around outlets and corners.
