Paver Sand Calculator

paver sand calculator. Leveling sand and polymeric joint sand for paver patios, walkways, and driveways.

The Short Answer: Leveling sand: 1 inch deep over the paver area. A 200 sq ft patio needs about 0.6 cubic yards of concrete sand. Polymeric joint sand: 1 bag covers about 30-60 sq ft depending on paver size and joint width. Let it cure 24 hours before rain.

Sand for Paver Installations

Paver installations use two types of sand: leveling sand (bedding sand) and joint sand (polymeric sand). They serve completely different purposes and are not interchangeable.

Leveling sand is concrete sand (coarse, angular) spread 1 inch deep over the compacted gravel base. It creates a smooth, level bed for the pavers to sit on. Screed it to a uniform 1-inch depth using screed rails -- the surface must be perfectly flat because the pavers follow every contour.

Polymeric sand is a specialized joint-filling sand containing polymer binders. After sweeping it into the joints between pavers and activating with water, it hardens into a semi-rigid fill that locks the pavers together and prevents weed growth. One 50-lb bag covers 30-60 sq ft depending on paver size and joint width.

Frequently Asked Questions

Leveling sand depth is 1 inch (per ICPI standards). For a 200 sq ft patio: 200 x (1/12) = 16.7 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 0.62 cubic yards. That's about 0.84 tons. Order by the ton from a landscape supplier -- ask for concrete sand or ASTM C33 concrete aggregate, not play sand or mason sand.

One 50-lb bag covers 30-60 sq ft depending on paver size and joint width. Smaller pavers with wider joints (like 4x8 bricks with 1/4-inch joints) use more sand per square foot. Large 12x12 pavers with tight joints use less. For a 200 sq ft patio with standard 4x8 pavers: about 5-7 bags. Always buy 1 extra bag -- running short of polymeric sand mid-application is problematic because partially activated sand cannot be topped off easily.
