The Short Answer: One gallon of ceiling paint covers 350-400 sq ft. A 12x14 room (168 sq ft ceiling) needs about 1 gallon for two coats. Ceiling paint is thicker than wall paint — use the manufacturer coverage rate, not wall paint rates.
Ceiling Paint Guide
Ceiling paint is thicker and more drip-resistant than wall paint -- it's specifically formulated to apply overhead without spattering. Most ceiling paint is ultra-flat white, which hides imperfections and creates a uniform, non-reflective surface. One gallon covers 350-400 sq ft in one coat.
Textured ceilings (popcorn, knockdown, orange peel) absorb more paint -- reduce coverage to 200-250 sq ft per gallon for heavy textures. Smooth ceilings give the standard 350 sq ft per gallon. Always use a roller with the appropriate nap: 3/8" for smooth ceilings, 3/4" for light texture, 1" for heavy texture.
