How Much Playground Mulch Do You Need?

Playground mulch depth is not a preference — it is a safety specification. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) publishes depth guidelines based on equipment fall height, and complying with these recommendations directly affects injury risk if a child falls. Calculate volume by your play area dimensions and the required depth for your equipment height.

CPSC-Recommended Playground Mulch Depths

The play zone should extend at least 6 feet from the perimeter of the equipment in all directions. For swings, extend twice the height of the pivot point in both the front and back of the swing arc.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CPSC recommends a minimum of 9 inches for equipment with fall heights between 4 and 6 feet — the range for most residential play sets. For lower structures (under 4 feet), 6 inches is the minimum. Rubber mulch is certified to ASTM F1292 standards at specific depths — check the product label for its fall height rating, which varies by material density.

A 10 × 20 ft play area at 9-inch depth: 200 × 0.75 = 150 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 5.6 cubic yards. At 12-inch depth: 7.4 cubic yards. Bulk wood mulch covers about 1 cubic yard per 100 sq ft at 3 inches — playground depths require 3 to 4 times more volume than typical landscape mulch applications.

Wood fiber and shredded mulch compress over time and lose their shock-attenuation properties. Test depth every 3 to 6 months in high-use areas using a probe or ruler — add material when depth falls below the minimum for your equipment height. Rubber mulch does not compress or decompose and typically only needs to be added if material has been displaced or removed.
