How Much Playground Mulch Do You Need?
Playground mulch depth is not a preference — it is a safety specification. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) publishes depth guidelines based on equipment fall height, and complying with these recommendations directly affects injury risk if a child falls. Calculate volume by your play area dimensions and the required depth for your equipment height.
CPSC-Recommended Playground Mulch Depths
- Equipment fall height up to 4 ft — 6 inches of loose fill material
- Equipment fall height 4–6 ft — 9 inches of loose fill material
- Equipment fall height 6–8 ft — 12 inches of loose fill material
- Equipment fall height over 8 ft — Consult CPSC Handbook for Playground Safety for certification-grade materials and depths
The play zone should extend at least 6 feet from the perimeter of the equipment in all directions. For swings, extend twice the height of the pivot point in both the front and back of the swing arc.
Playground Mulch Material Comparison
- Engineered wood fiber (EWF) — The preferred material for certified CPSC-compliant playgrounds. Interlocks when compacted, ADA accessible when properly maintained. Requires annual top-up as it compresses.
- Shredded wood / bark mulch — Low cost, widely available. Compliant to CPSC depth recommendations but not suitable for ADA pathways. Decomposes over time, requiring regular replenishment.
- Rubber mulch — Higher upfront cost, lower maintenance. Does not compress or decompose. Excellent shock absorption. Some concerns about rubber leachate — use only IPEMA-certified materials for certified playgrounds.
- Sand — Good fall attenuation but hardens when wet. Can harbour bacteria and insects. Not recommended by CPSC for public playgrounds; still used in residential sandpit play areas.
