How to Calculate Mulch Cost
Mulch cost is simply volume times price. Calculate your cubic yard requirement using the main mulch calculator, then multiply by the price per cubic yard from your supplier. Or enter your bag price to calculate total cost for bagged mulch. The key decision: bags or bulk?
Mulch Price Reference (2026)
- Bulk shredded hardwood mulch — $25 to $45 per cubic yard delivered
- Bulk dyed mulch (brown, red, black) — $30 to $55 per cubic yard
- Bulk cedar or cypress mulch — $40 to $70 per cubic yard
- Bagged shredded mulch (2 cu ft bag) — $4 to $7 at home centres. Equivalent to $54 to $95 per cubic yard.
- Premium bagged mulch (cedar, dyed) — $6 to $10 per 2 cu ft bag. Equivalent to $81 to $135 per cubic yard.
Bags vs Bulk: When Each Makes Sense
- Use bags when: The area is under 3 cubic yards, access for a bulk delivery truck is difficult, or you want to mix mulch types for different beds.
- Use bulk when: You need more than 3 cubic yards, you have a large open area that a wheelbarrow can reach, and you can accept a delivery truck. The savings are typically 40 to 60% over bagged price.
- Free mulch option: Many municipalities and tree service companies offer free wood chip mulch. ArborDay.org and ChipDrop are two resources for locating free or low-cost chips. These are less refined in appearance than commercial mulch but function well as a base layer or in naturalistic plantings.
