How Much Bark Mulch Do You Need?
Bark mulch is sold by the cubic foot (bags) or cubic yard (bulk). Calculate the volume your bed or application area needs based on length, width, and depth. Standard landscape application is 2 to 3 inches — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without creating conditions that suffocate roots.
Recommended Bark Mulch Depth by Application
- Garden beds (flowers, shrubs) — 2 to 3 inches. Do not mound mulch against plant stems — leave a 2-inch clear zone around each plant base.
- Tree rings — 2 to 4 inches extending to the drip line, never touching the trunk. The donut shape — not the volcano — is correct.
- Slopes — 3 to 4 inches, using a coarser-grade bark that locks together and resists washing. Consider jute erosion netting for slopes over 20%.
- Pathways — 3 to 4 inches for comfortable walking and weed suppression.
Bark Mulch Types
- Shredded bark mulch — Interlocks when applied, resists blowing and washing. Good for slopes. Decomposes over 1–2 years, improving soil as it breaks down.
- Bark nuggets / large bark — Decorative, holds its look longer. Does not interlock as well — can scatter. Better for flat, sheltered beds.
- Mini nuggets / fines — Smaller particle size, decomposes faster. Better for vegetable gardens where faster nutrient release is beneficial.
- Cedar bark mulch — Natural insect-repelling oils. Good around the foundation of a house to discourage insects. Slightly higher cost.
