How Much Pea Gravel Do You Need?

Pea gravel volume follows the same formula as any aggregate: area times depth, converted to cubic yards. The typical application depth for pea gravel ranges from 2 inches for decorative coverage to 4 inches for paths and 6 inches for playgrounds. Pea gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, slightly less than crushed stone because of its rounder shape and lower packing density.

A 10 × 10 ft patio at 3-inch depth: 100 × 0.25 = 25 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 0.93 cubic yards — about 1 cubic yard. At 4 inches deep: 1.23 cubic yards. For a decorative layer only (2 inches): 0.62 cubic yards — about 30 bags. Open the gravel calculator to enter your exact dimensions.

Pea gravel weighs approximately 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard — roughly 2,600 to 3,000 pounds. A standard pickup truck can safely carry about half a cubic yard (650–750 lb). For orders over 1 cubic yard, arrange bulk delivery to avoid overloading a vehicle. Always check your truck's payload capacity before loading.

Three to four inches is the standard depth for a pea gravel path. Shallower than 3 inches results in thin coverage that scatters easily and exposes the ground beneath. Four inches provides better stability underfoot and reduces the amount of gravel kicked onto adjacent lawn areas. Always install edging on both sides to contain the gravel and prevent spreading.
