How to Estimate Flooring
Flooring estimation starts with room area (length × width) plus a waste factor. The waste accounts for cuts at walls, around obstacles, defective planks, and pattern matching. Straight layouts need 10% waste; diagonal and herringbone patterns need 15–20% because the angle creates more cut-off pieces.
Boxes = Material needed ÷ Coverage per box
Underlayment rolls = Material needed ÷ 100
Flooring Type Comparison
- Solid hardwood — ¾" thick, can be refinished 3–5 times. $4–$12/sq ft. ~20 sq ft per box.
- Engineered hardwood — Real wood veneer over plywood. More stable than solid. $3–$10/sq ft. ~22 sq ft per box.
- Laminate — Photographic image over fiberboard. Most affordable wood-look. $1–$5/sq ft. ~24 sq ft per box.
- Vinyl plank (LVP) — Waterproof, click-lock. Best for kitchens and basements. $2–$7/sq ft. ~24 sq ft per box.
- Bamboo — Grass, not wood. Hard and eco-friendly. $3–$8/sq ft. ~20 sq ft per box.
Underlayment
Most floating floors (laminate, engineered, vinyl plank without attached pad) need a foam or cork underlayment beneath them. It provides cushion, sound dampening, and moisture protection. One roll covers about 100 sq ft. Some vinyl plank products have underlayment pre-attached — check your product specs before buying separate underlayment.
