Concrete Column and Pier Guide
Concrete columns are cylindrical pours used for deck footings, porch supports, and structural piers. The most common method uses cardboard Sonotube forms — the tube sits in a hole, you pour concrete in, and the tube stays in place as a permanent form below grade.
Common sizes: 8", 10", 12", 16", 18", 24" diameter
12" × 4 ft = 3.14 cu ft ≈ 6 bags (80 lb)
Column diameter depends on the load it carries. Deck footings typically use 12-inch Sonotubes. Porch columns and heavy structural piers use 16–24 inches. The footing depth must extend below the frost line — check your local building code for the required depth in your area.
