Room-by-Room Carpet Estimation
Carpet estimating is best done room by room because each room is a separate installation with its own seam layout. Measuring the whole house as one number leads to underestimating waste -- each room has its own cuts, transitions, and fitting losses.
For each room: length x width (at the widest points, including closets) x 1.10 waste factor = total square feet needed. Convert to square yards (÷ 9) for pricing. Closets are often carpeted with the cutoff piece from the room -- include closet area in the room measurement, and the installer will work it out.
Seam placement matters: the goal is to put seams in low-traffic, low-visibility areas. In bedrooms, the seam usually runs parallel to the main window. Your carpet retailer will diagram the seam layout based on room dimensions and roll width. Ask to see the seam plan before ordering.
