Brick Calculator
Brick Calculator
Brick count, mortar bags, and sand estimates for walls, veneers, and garden projects. Standard, queen, king, and modular sizes.
The Short Answer: A standard brick wall uses about 7 bricks per square foot (including mortar joints). A 100 sq ft wall needs roughly 700 bricks, 5 bags of mortar, and 2.5 cubic feet of sand. Add 10% for waste from cuts and breakage.
How to Calculate Bricks
Brick count depends on wall area and brick size. Standard bricks (the most common residential size) require about 6.86 bricks per square foot of wall including mortar joints. Queen and king bricks are larger, so fewer are needed per square foot.
FormulaWall area = Length × Height - Openings
Bricks = Wall area × Bricks per sq ft × (1 + Waste %)
Mortar bags = Bricks ÷ 142 (standard bricks per 70 lb bag)
Brick Sizes and Coverage
- Standard / Modular — 8 × 2¼ × 3⅝ inches. ~6.86 per sq ft. The most common residential brick.
- Queen — 8 × 2¾ × 3⅛ inches. ~5.76 per sq ft. Slightly taller, fewer courses per foot.
- King — 10 × 2⅝ × 3⅝ inches. ~4.80 per sq ft. Larger face, fewer bricks needed.
- Utility — 12 × 4 × 4 inches. ~4.50 per sq ft. Large format for structural walls.
The Bottom Line
Brick is sold by the thousand in bulk and by the pallet from supply yards. A standard pallet holds about 500 bricks. Order 10% extra for cuts, breakage, and future repairs — matching brick color from a different production run is nearly impossible. The calculator gives you the brick count, mortar, and sand from your wall dimensions. Take that number to a masonry supplier, not a home center — prices are significantly better in bulk.
